Oxford Archaeological Plan

The Oxford Archaeological Plan (OAP) is project that brings together two separate English Heritage funded initiatives: The Urban Archaeological Strategy (UAS) project and the Historic Landscape Characterisation (HLC) project. Both these projects are intended to help local authorities develop the available evidence base for the historic environment to support informed management. The UAS component of the OAP comprises a series of 9 period based archaeological resource assessments for the Oxford Local Authority Area (LAA) and accompanying 9 period based archaeological research agendas. The HLC component of the OAP comprises digital mapping of HLC data for the Oxford LAA and more detailed Historic Urban Characterisation data for the post-medieval and earlier core of Oxford. Furthermore a series of 44 historic urban character assessments have been produced for district character areas within the historic core. The results of the OAP have been summarised in an Archaeological Action Plan for the city. An additional element to the OAP project not related to the UAS or HLC projects has been the production of 40 summary statements of archaeological interest for selected monuments in the city, to address the absence of historic Monument Protection Plan dataset for these monuments.
