Plasmodium yoelii Genome sequencing and assembly, Gene Model Creation

The genome of Plasmodium yoelii 17XNL strain (clone 1.1) from BEI Resources was determined by combined Nanopore long-read sequencing and Illumina short-read sequencing. The transcriptome of mixed blood stage parasites (ring, trophozoite, schizont, male gametocyte, female gametocyte) was determined by direct RNA-sequencing using Nanopore long-read sequencing, and was combined with Illumina short read sequencing of mixed blood stage parasites and mixed male and female gametocytes. The combined information yielded 16 contigs (14 nuclear chromosomes, apicoplast genome, mitochondrial genome) for the assembled genome, and provides the first gene models for Plasmodium yoelii beyond coding sequences.
