Travel diaries of members of successive generations of the Demidov family from the mid eighteenth century onwards (Aleksandr, Pavel and Petr Georgevich between 1751 and 1761, and Nikita Akinfievich in 1771-1773), shed light on how Russian travelers visited Naples and the surrounding area, what distinguished those visits as well as their perceptions of Vesuvius.
