Ongoing habitat restoration and monitoring on Maatsuyker Island WHA

This project will continue the program of annual follow-up and monitoring, and build on positive outcomes achieved. Targeted weeds are Blackberry, Hebe Elliptica and Montbretia. Weed invasion can alter the structure of the island’s unique vegetation and suitability of breeding habitat for the large burrow-nesting seabird populations (incl. 3 EPBC listed spp.). Hebe is highly invasive in these conditions and the National Blackberry Strategy targets the island for eradication. Program continuation is crucial for protection of biodiversity. Friends of Maatsuyker Island continues to build capacity by including and training new volunteers on each field trip and will continue to promote its work to the wider community.
