Description
The data files present data collected
at or relevant to different field sites that were used to construct the Keeling-plot
intercept figures and 18-oxygen discrimination figures published in the manuscript.
Each data file represents a different
field location in the Amazon Basin of Brazil with the name of the file reflecting
the field site location. These field locations were
Ji- Paraná Forest, latitude =
10.08° S, longitude = 61.92° W
Ji- Paraná Pasture, latitude =
10.75° S, longitude = 62.37° W
Manaus Forest, latitude = 2.69°
S, longitude = 60.11° W
Manaus Pasture, latitude = 3.02°
S, longitude = 54.06° W
Santarém Forest, latitude = 2.85°
S, longitude = 54.05° W
Santarém Pasture, latitude = 3.02°
S, longitude = 54.06° W
Within each of these text files,
we provide 18 columns of data collected at that field site. The data
columns are as follows:
(a) month and year of data collection
(b) assumed atmospheric carbon
dioxide concentration in the troposphere based on NOAA/CMDL data (ftp.cmdl.noaa.gov/ccg,
September 2002); units of parts per million
(c) assumed carbon isotope ratio
of atmospheric carbon dioxide in the troposphere based on NOAA/CMDL data (ftp.cmdl.noaa.gov/ccg,
September 2002); units of per mil relative to the V-PDB international
standard
(d) the ratio of the leaf intercellular
to atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations based on inverting measured leaf
carbon isotope ratio values reported in the Ometto et al. (2002)
using the Farquhar et al. (1989) predictive model; data
are unitless
(e) the calculated leaf intercellular
carbon dioxide concentrations based on the product of the ratio of the leaf
intercellular to atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and the atmospheric
carbon dioxide concentration in the troposphere; units are parts per million
(f) the calculated leaf discrimination
against 18-oxygen in carbon dioxide based on the model of Farquhar
et al. (1993); units of per mil relative to the V-SMOW international standard
(g) the Keeling-plot intercept
for the carbon isotope ratio of ecosystem respiration; units are per mil relative
to the V-PDB international standard
(h) the Keeling-plot intercept
for the oxygen isotope ratio of ecosystem respiration; units are per mil relative
to the V-SMOW international standard
(i) assumed oxygen isotope ratio
of atmospheric carbon dioxide in the troposphere based on NOAA/CMDL data (ftp.cmdl.noaa.gov/ccg,
September 2002); units of per mil relative to the V-SMOW international
standard
(j) the oxygen isotope ratio of
atmospheric carbon dioxide measured at the top of the canopy; units of per
mil relative to the V-SMOW international standard
(k) the oxygen isotope ratio of
carbon dioxide in equilibrium with leaf water; units of per mil relative to
the V-SMOW international standard
(l) the oxygen isotope ratio of
leaf water; units of per mil relative to the V-SMOW international standard
(m) leaf temperature; units are
degrees Celsius
(n) the equilibrium fractionation
factor between oxygen in water and oxygen in carbon dioxide; data are unitless
(o) the oxygen isotope ratio of
stem water which is assumed to be the same as the soil water being taken up
by the plant; units of per mil relative to the V-SMOW international standard
(p) the diffusion fractionation
against 18-oxygen associated with the gaseous diffusion of carbon dioxide
in soils; units are per mil
(q) the oxygen isotope ratio of
the Keeling plot intercept based on equations presented in the manuscript
assuming that carbon dioxide effluxing from leaves is in equilibrium with
a leaf water whose value is the same as stem water; units are per mil relative
to the V-SMOW international standard
(r) the oxygen isotope ratio of
the Keeling plot intercept based on equations presented in the manuscript
assuming that carbon dioxide effluxing from leaves is in equilibrium with
a measured leaf water; units are per mil relative to the V-SMOW international
standard
Data reported in this manuscript
were part of an ongoing USA-Brazil collaborative research project titled The
Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA). A data and
information management system located at INPE/CPTEC - the LBA Data and Information
System (LBA-DIS) - has been developed by INPE, with NASA's participation.
The LBA-DIS holds, manages, and distributes LBA data and information. INPE
is the repository for all LBA-DIS data and information, and NASA will have
at its disposal copies of the system and of the data and information.
The core of LBA-DIS is the archival and distribution system at INPE/CPTEC,
and managed by the LBA Central Office, which has full responsibility for LBA
data archival and distribution for decades to come. This LBA-DIS central node
has mirror sites and supporting nodes in the U.S. and Europe.
As required by Brazilian law,
the original data collected in Brazil and reported in this manuscript must
remain in Brazil. Additionally, NASA has agreed to ensure that copies of scientific
data and results from LBA will be provided to INPE/CPTEC. The NASA-designated
long-term archive for ecological and biogeochemical data is the Distributed
Active Archive Center (DAAC) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Thus, data collected through LBA-ECO will be archived and distributed at the
ORNL DAAC as well as in Brazil. In addition, these data are mirrored at ftp://ecophys.biology.utah.edu/lba
Additional data related to this
manuscript that continued to be collected after the time of the publication
of this manuscript can be found at the sites referred to above.
