Diesel degrading, metabolically versatile strain of Rhodopseudomonas sp, designated strain RP2, was the dominant species isolated from the anodic biofilms of enriched diesel-fed bioelectrochemical remediation systems (BERS). Salient properties of the strain were direct electrode respiration, dissimilatory metal oxide reduction, cyst formation, anaerobic nitrate reduction, free living diazotrophy and the ability to degrade n-alkane components of diesel in anoxic, photic environments. Given its potential for remediation, wide adaptability and electrochemical activity, the strain appears to have a considerable potential for bioaugmentation operations using BERS.
