ThereportrecommendsaframeworktoassessthevalueofmRNAtechnologyindevelopingvaccinesandtherapeuticsagainstotherinfectiousdiseases.Aframeworkcouldalsohelpestablishthetechnology’spotentialroleinaddressingcancerandautoimmunediseases.Toinformsuchaframework,thereportmapsouttheclinicaltrialstatusofmRNAvaccinesinthemostadvancedstagesofdevelopment.WhiletheCOVID-19vaccinesaretheonlysafeandefficaciouspreventivemRNAvaccinesdevelopedandapprovedforhumanusetodate,mRNAvaccinesagainstcytomegalovirus(acommonvirusthatcanthreatenbabiesandthosewithaweakenedimmunesystem),influenzaAandB,andRSVareinPhase3trials.Thereisalsoon-goingdiscoveryworkintuberculosis,malaria,HIVaswellasnoncommunicablediseases.Thereportalsocallsforfurtherresearchtoaddressthepotentialofthistechnologyaswellasitslimitations.ImprovingthestabilityofmRNAvaccinesathighertemperaturesshouldbeakeytargetofinvestmentandresearchefforts.Anotherkeyrecommendationisensuringend-to-enddevelopmentandaccessbywayofinvestmentandapplyinglessonsfromCOVID-19initiatives,suchastheACT-Accelerator,whichworkedtosecureaccesstoCOVID-19tests,treatments,andvaccines.
