61/5896 is a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strain isolated in England in 1961, exhibiting high-level resistance to oxacillin. Determination of whole genome sequence of this strain was done to explore a mecA-independent mechanism of resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics.
