Neighbourhood tree competition promotes microbial diversity in phyllosphere

This study investigates how neighbourhood tree competition influences microbial diversity in the phyllosphere within a large-scale subtropical forest biodiversity experiment. We show that neighbourhood competition enhances microbial diversity through its effects on host functional traits. These findings highlight an overlooked pathway linking tree–tree interactions to ecosystem functioning via the phyllosphere microbiome.
