This dataset contains 16,724 observations of mean weekly hours actually worked per employee from 41 African countries spanning 1991 to 2025, sourced from the International Labour Organizations (ILO) ILOSTAT database. It focuses on a single indicator: Mean weekly hours actually worked per employee by sex, public/private sector and marital status (indicator code: HOW_XEES_SEX_INS_MTS_NB). The data includes annual frequency observations with detailed disaggregation dimensions such as sex (total, male, female), institutional sector (e.g., total), and marital status (total). The dataset is presented in tabular format with columns including country code, country name, data source, indicator code, indicator label, sex classification, classification variables, observation year, observed value, observation status, and related notes. The data is harmonized by the ILO following International Conference of Labour Statisticians (ICLS) definitions and includes source flags for traceability. It is suitable for tasks like tabular classification, regression, and time-series forecasting, providing machine-learning-ready data for research on African labor markets, working hours, and employment trends. The dataset is repackaged by Electric Sheep Africa and released under the CC BY 4.0 license.
