Replication Data and Code for: "Homicidal Violence and State Capacity in Latin America: The Story of the Paper Leviathans"

Description: This repository contains the dataset and STATA do-file required to replicate the analyses reported in the article "Homicidal Violence and State Capacity in Latin America: The Story of the Paper Leviathans," published in Crime, Law and Social Change (Springer). Overview The study examines the relationship between four dimensions of state capacity —coercive, extractive, administrative, and legal— and homicide rates across 18 Latin American countries over the period 1997–2020. The analysis employs panel data techniques including Ordinary Least Squares (OLS), Random Effects (RE), Fixed Effects (FE), Double Fixed Effects, and Instrumental Variable (IV) estimations. Contents Dataset (.dta): Panel dataset covering 18 Latin American countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Uruguay, and Venezuela) for the years 1997–2020. Variables include homicide rates, four state capacity indicators (military personnel share, tax revenue as % of GDP, World Bank Government Effectiveness Index, and World Bank Rule of Law Index), and control variables (youth bulge, Gini index, infant mortality, Human Development Index, economic growth, ethnic fragmentation, internal armed conflicts, and drug trafficking). Do-file (.do): STATA script that reproduces all tables and estimations presented in the article, including OLS, RE, FE, Double FE, and IV models with robust standard errors. Data sources Primary data were compiled from the World Bank, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Standardized World Income Inequality Database (SWIID v9.5), the Maddison Project Database, the Country-Year Dataset on Organised Violence (UCDP), the Comparative Constitutions Project, and Loveman (2013).
