WESTERN THEORY, ORIENTAL PRACTICE: ADAPTATION OF MONA BAKER AND PETER NEWMARK'S APPROACHES TO UZBEK TRANSLATION STUDIES

This scholarly article analyzes how the theories of two major representatives of the English school of translation studies – Peter Newmark (semantic and communicative translation, text functions) and Mona Baker (levels of equivalence, corpus-based analysis, translation strategies) are adapted to the traditions of Uzbek linguistics and translation. The study uses the comparative-typological and content-analysis methods to systematize the changes, additions and critical comments made by scientists from Uzbekistan (G. Salomov, Sh. Rakhmatullayev, N. Komilova, D. Khudoyberganova, M. Kurbanova and others). As a result, it is found that Newmark and Baker's approaches are not pure, but a three-stage hybrid model is formed, which is harmonized with the agglutinative nature of the Uzbek language, the relative freedom of speech order, the complexity of the adjective system and the Islamic-cultural context. This model is currently used in the lessons of interpretation in universities of Uzbekistan. The article shows the transformation of Western theories in the Eastern context, justifying the need to abandon the "one-dimensional" approach in translation studies.
