Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by Treponema pallidum sub-species pallidum (TPP), a non-culturable Spirochaete bacteria. In recent years, global Syphilis prevalence has been increasing, with an estimated 12 million cases annually, and UK cases have risen particularly dramatically, with approximately 6000 UK cases in 2016 (compared to 3000/year as recently as 2012). However, our current understanding of pathogen diversity is extremely limited, both at the global and national scale. In collaboration with Public Health England, we will sequence a large collection UK Syphilis samples directly from clinical specimens in order to provide a detailed picture of countrywide Syphilis population structure and sexual network relationships.
