Although ammonia inhibition represents a major operational issue for anaerobic digestion, methanogenic community and pathway dynamics in response to ammonia stress still remains unclear. In order to identify the metabolic pathways and functional microorganisms involved in the degradation of acetate under ammonia stress, stable isotopic signatures of biogas were measured in batch thermophilic acetate fed experiments at low (0.26 g/L) and high (7.00 g/L) Total Ammonia Nitrogen concentrations (TAN). In parallel experiments, Stable Isotope Probing (SIP) analysis of active microbial communities was conducted.
