Desulfococcus multivorans is a d-Proteobacterium of the Desulfobacterales that was shown to methylate mercury at an intermediate level that is neither considered a weak methylator or a strong methylator. D. multivorans has been under study for its capacity for binding polyvalent metal cations and has the capability for complete oxidation of lactate and benzoate. We present the genome sequence of Desulfococcus multivorans as a resource for evaluation of genetic elements associated with the ability of bacterial to methylate mercury
