With the gradual increase of antibiotic resistance there is a growing demand for the discovery of novel therapeutic agents. Lantibiotics are a group of natural products which belong to the RiPPs (ribosomally synthesized and post translationally modified peptides) and have been identified as potential antimicrobial agents that can be used for the treatment of serious Gram positive bacterial infections. This study characterizes a lantibiotic isolated from Streptococcus agalactiae strain T44 which bears protein sequence similarity to Nisin P. This entails information on the isolation of this peptide from culture to characterizing its peptide sequence and demonstrating its antimicrobial activity against a selected panel of Gram positive bacteria including MRSA (methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus).
