Mobility practices in Swiss cities: A qualitative study on modal choices in commuting and everyday mobility

Transportation plays a key role in the Swiss energy transition. One third of people's trips correspond to commuting to and from work. In Swiss cities, ca. one third of commuters live in the same city where they work and thus have relatively short commuting distances. Nontheless, 50% of the trips of less than 5km are made using an individual motorised vehicle. The aim of this study is to analyse urban commuters' modal choices and what plays into their everyday mobility practices. It focuses on commuters who live close to their workplace. In the context of this study, we aim to better understand into which values, spatio-temporal constraints and material conditions mobility practices are embedded, as well as how mobility practices change.
