Dimethyl Ether (DME) shows significant promise in replacing liquified petroleum gas (LPG) as a major fuel in the near future. It burns with less nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions and soot, and although it has a lower calorific value per kg, its other properties make it a preferred fuel. In addition, DME has similar physicochemical properties to LPG and can in most instances be immediately substituted for it with minimal adjustments to existing infrastructure. This report outlines the viability of using DME as an LPG fuel blend or substitute. Studies that compared DME to LPG and other fuels were investigated, with a focus on the cetane number and calorific value of each fuel, data were presented.
