The bacterial MAMP flagellin is a protein expressed by both pathogens and human gut commensals. Toll-like receptor 5 (TLR5), expressed by gut epithelial cells, binds flagellin, which induces activation of pro-inflammatory immune responses. Some pathogens evade TLR5 signaling by preventing flagellin-TLR5 interactions, but how commensal bacteria avoid TLR5 activation is unclear.
