Effect of Treatment on the Bacterial Community in Down Syndrome Patients with Periodontitis

This study investigates the effects of nonsurgical periodontal therapy on the bacterial community in individuals with Down syndrome (DS), who are highly susceptible to periodontitis. Six DS patients were included, and subgingival plaque samples were collected before and after treatment. The bacterial composition was analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing to assess changes in diversity and abundance. Samples were processed under sterile conditions, freeze-dried, and DNA was extracted for sequencing. The sequencing libraries were prepared using a two-step PCR method and analyzed using the MiSeq platform. The results revealed microbial shifts following treatment, suggesting potential improvements in periodontal health. This study highlights the importance of tailored periodontal care in DS patients and provides insights into microbial changes associated with treatment.
