Latvijas Republikas karavīra zvēresta skaidrojums: sociālais, militārais un reliģiskais aspekts

The article explains the oath of soldiers of the National Armed Forces of Latvia in a socio-civic context. It also indicates the religious problematic of swearing, looking at its use in both the Old and New Testaments, as well as in the explanation of Dr. Martin Luther and the Book of Concord (Lutheran Creeds). In this context, it answers the frequently asked question whether a Christian is entitled to swear, i.e., to take a military oath, in light of Christ’s seemingly unequivocal prohibition to do so in Matt 5:33–37.
