Microbial diversity of Young Sound in NE Greenland

This study aims to describe, quantify and connect the bioavailability of the three carbon sources and bacterial diversity in a high Arctic fjord system (Young Sound, NE Greenland). The fjord receives discharge from land terminating glaciers and lowland rivers with vegetation-covered catchment area, which in addition to phytoplankton production and inflow from the open ocean make up the three main sources of organic carbon in the fjord. During the ice-free period (July-October 2014) we measured the concentration, C:N ratio and bioavailability of the dissolved organic matter and recorded bacterial activity, abundance and diversity within the 3 major rivers and at 4 stations along a fjord transect.
