Code for "Cassatts in the Attic: Is there a gender gap in the commercialization of science?"

Abstract: We analyze nearly 70 million scientific articles to estimate the gender dynamics of commercializing science. We report a gap of 14%, which does not appear to be explained either by the quality of the science or its commercial potential. The gap is widest among papers with female last authors (i.e., lab head or PI) when publishing high-quality science. However, the gap vanishes when authors self -commercialize discoveries via new ventures, and the gap is reduced when commercializing in cooperation with firms that are smaller or have more female inventors.<br><br>note: this repository contains only code. more than a quarter terabyte of data are retrieved by this code from persistent Zenodo repositories. nearly a half a terabyte of additional datafiles are created. also, the code will not execute without several confidential files that cannot be shared (and have been shared with the AEA Data editor). <br><br>the README has complete details on data provenance. simply unpack the .zip file into a new directory and make sure you have both Stata and Python available.
