Use of novel diagnostics for the control of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections

This thesis explores innovative diagnostic approaches to improve access to HIV and STI testing, particularly for communities underserved by traditional healthcare models. Through a combination of systematic reviews, qualitative research, health preference studies, economic evaluations, and implementation science, it demonstrates that HIV self-testing and near-to-patient STI diagnostics are safe, acceptable, cost-effective, and capable of transforming prevention and treatment pathways. A national trial of peer-delivered HIV self-testing achieved exceptional uptake and engagement, reaching individuals often missed by routine services. Collectively, the findings offer strong evidence to guide the integration of person-centred diagnostics into public health strategies, advancing more equitable HIV and STI prevention.
