Soybean staygreen syndrome (SGS) is the most serious disaster for soybean production systems. However, the direct cause of SGS in soybean has been highly debated. Here, we studied the bacterial, fungal and viral communities associated with SGS using amplicons (bacterial 16S and fungal ITS), RNA (soybean mRNA) and small RNA (viral sRNA) sequencing approaches at the main soybean production sites in China, and investigated what is the causal agent of SGS in soybean and how SGS affects the assembly and function of plant-associated microbiomes.
