Week 4: Dataset 1: Quadrats

Description

The experiment was conducted on Monday September 28nd at approximately 3:45 pm until 5:00. All the data was collected in the woodlot and corresponds to dataset 1. It was cloudy, windy and humid. The temperature was around 20 degrees celcius.

Materials

1) Quadrat 1m by 1m

Method:

20 quadrats were used in total, 10 to be placed in the grassland and 10 to be placed in the woodlot. The selection of each quadrat in the habitat was randomized by first selecting a location and then the next one would be located 1.5 meters north to the previous location where the quadrat was placed.

The quadrat was left in place for a duration of 2minutes. After the desired time elapsed 2 minutes were spent counting the insects within the quadrat.

The recognizable RTUs include dragonflies, mayflies, grasshoppers,bugs,butterflies,moths beetles, flies, ants, wasps, bees and spider.
