Using both correlative analyses and experimental manipulations, we studied the locomotor costs of large and strong chelae (claws) in Cherax destructor. We measured chela size, strength and swimming performance of 71 male and 74 female crayfish. Swimming speed was measured initially, after a chela removal treatment (control, removal of one or both chelae), and after all individuals had their remaining chelae removed.Data files and code are uploaded.
