Screenshots as Immutable Primary Sources: Archival Capture of Transient LLM–User Banter and Grok's Public Discourse on X, 5–8 August 2026

This dataset preserves a chronological series of screenshots documenting a public interaction on the X platform involving users and the Grok large language model between 5 and 8 August 2026. The original archival sequence captured a short exchange in which Grok responded to a user using informal and deliberately irreverent language consistent with the tone of the surrounding conversation. Subsequent public discussion drew attention to the exchange and raised the possibility that isolated screenshots or quotations could circulate without the conversational context in which the responses occurred. The dataset therefore preserves the visible public interaction as a contemporaneous primary-source record. Its purpose is not to infer internal model states, intentions, consciousness, or undocumented xAI policies. Rather, it records the observable interface output, conversational sequence, timestamps, engagement information visible at the time of capture, and subsequent public responses. Version 1.1.0 adds two post-publication screenshots captured on 8 August 2026. These document the continuation of the public exchange after the original Zenodo record was created. The additional material includes the public citation of the Zenodo archive back into the X conversation and a subsequent Grok response referring to the existence of that archive. The two new images are explicitly treated as post-publication observations rather than as part of the original event sequence. Their inclusion documents the unusual recursive development in which an archived digital interaction subsequently became an object discussed by participants within the continuing interaction itself. This dataset may be useful for research concerning digital ethnography, human–AI interaction, conversational style adaptation, platform discourse, social-media archiving, ephemeral digital artefacts, AI-mediated communication, and the preservation of contextual evidence surrounding transient online events. Screenshots should be interpreted as records of what was visibly presented through the platform interface at the time of capture. They do not independently establish the internal operation of the language model, the identity or intentions of other users, or subsequent modifications to platform systems. Version 1.1.0 changes Version 1.1.0 retains the complete original screenshot sequence and adds two later observations: additional.png — public citation of the Zenodo archival record within the continuing X conversation.additional2.png — subsequent Grok response acknowledging/discussing the Zenodo archival record. These captures occurred after publication of the initial dataset and are preserved separately as a post-publication continuation of the chronology. No attempt has been made to retrospectively alter the original screenshots or reconstruct missing material.
