Helicobacter pylori is a Gram-negative spiral bacterium, colonizes the human stomach mucosa. It causes chronic inflammation, which may progress to peptic ulceration, atrophic gastritis, and gastric cancer. Recently, phage, which can belong to a previously undescribed viral family, has been isolated from H. pylori isolates. In general, phage contributes to the host bacterial evolution by horizontal gene transfer and coevolutionary arms race. Currently, tens of H. pylori genomes are publically accessible. Here, we sequenced the phage-integrated H. pylori strain NY40, and examined the evolutionary impact of H. pylori by the phage by comparative genomic method.
