二人以上の普通世帯
・昭和59年1月1日における全652市および、町村については昭和55年国勢調査の近接する2調査区を調査市町村とした。
・調査市町村から選定された4188調査単位区（1調査単位区は昭和55年国勢調査の近接する2調査区）を選定し、さらに各調査単位区から12世帯を系統抽出し、全国50256世帯を対象に実施された。
単身者世帯
・二人以上の普通世帯を調査する全国の調査単位区の中から、合計4084世帯（うち、寮・寄宿舎に居住する単身者世帯については960世帯）を対象に実施された。

The dataset includes households with two or more individuals.
- For the 652 cities and towns as of January 1, 1954, the survey areas adjacent to the two survey districts from the National Census of 1950 were used as the survey cities and towns.
- From these survey cities and towns, 4,188 survey unit areas (each survey unit area consists of two adjacent survey districts from the 1950 National Census) were selected, and further, 12 households were systematically extracted from each survey unit area, resulting in a total of 50,256 households being targeted nationwide.
- For the purpose of investigating households with two or more individuals, a total of 4,084 households (including 960 households living in dormitories or boarding houses) were targeted from the survey unit areas across the nation.
