The functional Bph14 gene of RH appears to be important for BPH resistance at the early seedling stage of rice and could be used in conjunction with other BPH-resistant genes in rice breeding programs that confer resistance to BPH at the early and later growth stages. DGE analysis based on transcriptome data (RNA-seq) from RH and HCS-1 was used to prioritize candidate genes. Here, the RNA-seq data were obtained in three replicates after 0, 6, and 24 hours of BPH infestation from total RNA extracted from the aerial part of the seedlings using the TRIzol method (Rio et al., 2010). Another set of RNA-seq data was obtained at the same three time points from total RNA prepared from seedlings without BPH infestation. Six seedlings were pooled for each sample to ensure biological replication.
