Replication Data for: Avatar Anthropomorphism Continuum: A Blockchain-Based Analysis of Avatar Skin Purchases in the Metaverse

The dataset comprises transaction records of digital skins in Decentraland, a decentralized metaverse, covering the period from April 1, 2022, to October 2, 2023. It documents each transaction with data points such as timestamps, item's identifiers, and the blockchain wallet addresses of both buyers and sellers. This dataset introduces three novel metrics designed to assess the anthropomorphism of these virtual skins: Head Likeness (HL), Body Completeness (BC), and Body Likeness (BL). These metrics evaluate the extent to which each skin resembles human features and form. HL is measured on a scale from 1 (absence of facial features) to 5 (detailed human-like face), reflecting the development of facial features in the skins. BC quantifies the inclusion of essential human body parts (torso, legs, hands, feet, arms, head) on a scale from 1 (no body parts present) to 7 (all body parts present), providing an overview of the completeness of the avatar’s body. Lastly, BL ranges from 1 (Completely Unlike Human) to 5 (Detailed Human), assessing the general human resemblance of the avatar. The dataset encompasses 4,117 transactions relating to 209 unique skin items. Each record in the dataset is formatted as follows: Timestamp; Buyer's Ethereum address; Seller's Ethereum address; Item's smart contract address; Object type; HL score; BC score; BL score. This cataloging of transactions and innovative anthropomorphic metrics offer insights into the virtual economy and user preferences within Decentraland, making it a significant to research in digital goods and virtual economies.
