Young People and Young Adults in Germany 1993

The situation of young people in Eastern and Western Germany and
attitudes to youth-relevant and political questions. Topics: Most
important problems of the country and most important personal problem;
trip to the other part of Germany after the border opening and trip
abroad in 1992; earlier trips abroad; interest in politics; sympathy
scale for the parties; most able party regarding securing the future;
judgement on one´s own economic situation and expected further
development; father or mother as responsible person in raising
children; equal rights for men and women; attitude to solving conflicts
through violence; attitude to socialism; provision for old age by
individuals or the government; national pride; preference for
independence of the country or as part of a European nation;
advantageousness of the European Community for the country; attitude to
introduction of the European currency ECU; attitude to admission of
applicants for political asylum; understanding for violent
demonstrations against applicants for political asylum or being ashamed
due to this; general contentment with life; mobility readiness for
occupational reasons; satisfaction with housing; willingness to help of
parents or other persons given serious problems; reasons for
justification of violence; satisfaction with public selection of
facilities and services for young people; interest in selected leisure
activities (scale); most important reasons for restrictions in the area
of leisure possibilities; membership in a youth organization; regular
participation in events of the club; clique affiliation; foreigners in
one´s circle of friends; assessment of the danger of AIDS and threat
from drugs; conduct given a hypothetical attack on foreigners by young
people; work satisfaction; perceived jeopardy to job; living with
parents; one´s own room; assessment of economic situation of parental
home; perceived jeopardy to job of father and mother; age at leaving
parental home; current residential status; number of siblings; number
of children; desired number of children; socialization authority in
childhood; persons responsible for care during one´s time in school;
employment of father as well as mother during time in school; social
origins; Communion or Confirmation; religious denomination;
religiousness and belief in God. The following questions were posed in
Eastern Germany: judgement on the decision of the citizens of the GDR
in the first free elections in March 1990; fulfilled expectations
regarding unification of the two German nations; judgement on leisure
possibilities after the turning point; comparison of conditions before
the turning point with the current situation regarding social
protection, self-development, relationships with fellow-men, demands of
occupation, realization of desired occupation and demand of school;
participation in the Jugendweihe {DDR ceremony of adulthood}.
