This article proposes an alternative interpretation of the term <b>"зыбь" (zyb)</b> in the Russian language, diverging from common dictionary definitions that primarily associate it with wave phenomena. The author posits that "зыбь" originally referred to <b>hidden, deceptively stable, but potentially dangerous surface areas</b> that lead to the <b>death, absorption, suction, sinking, or submersion</b> of objects and subjects. The analysis is based on historical-linguistic data, etymological parallels (including the connection with the German <i>sieb</i> "sieve" and related words), and examples from classical Russian literature (Pushkin, Tyutchev, Bunin, Yesenin). The study aims to re-evaluate current understandings of the word "зыбь" and offer a more precise semantic meaning derived from Old Slavic roots and usage patterns. It emphasizes that <i>zyb</i> is an invisible, potentially fatal location formed by internal or external influences without visible surface changes, unlike waves. The article also addresses problems with contemporary erroneous interpretations of the term.
