A novel biofilm reactor supplies performance-enhancing chemicals via a permeable biofilm support

This study evaluated the potential of a novel biofilm reactor that supplies performance-enhancing chemicals directly to the base of a biofilm. The chemicals are supplied via a permeable membrane that serves as the biofilm support. Two studies were carried out to explore the potential efficiency of this reactor. In the first, a denitrifying biofilm was first established on the membrane, then chlorate was added to enhance the abundance of specialized (per)chlorate-reducing denitrifying bacteria.
