Microbial-mediated coupled manganese redox cycling for nitrogen removal provides a promising solution for ammonia-nitrogen (NH4+-N) wastewater treatment. However, the extracellular electron transfer (EET) rate of microorganisms becomes a key factor limiting the reaction rate of the nitrogen removal process. In order to assess the effects of manganese dioxide (MnO2) dosing as well as the electric field environment on the anaerobic ammonia oxidation microbial community, the present study analyzed the composition of manganese redox microbial and electroactive microbial communities at the phylum and genus levels by using bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequence sequencing techniques.
