U.S. Shipyard Asbestos Exposure Dataset, v1.3

Structured dataset documenting historical asbestos exposure at 35 major U.S. naval and commercial shipyards. Includes verified evidence records with primary source citations (PMID, NIOSH HHE numbers, EPA site IDs, appellate court citations), documented asbestos product brands, and geographic coordinates for each facility. v1.3 (July 2026): Applied independent citation audit via Claude Science. Removed 20 unverified or misattributed evidence records. Corrected 9 evidence tier assignments. Updated 11 citations with correct case names and limitations notes. Added 4 new verified evidence entries (Sparrows Point EPA Superfund ID EPA_000503, Marinship EPA site ID EPA_000891, Kaiser Richmond EPA ID EPA_001247, Bath Iron Works NIOSH HHE 89-0273-2022). Dataset now contains 35 shipyards, 80 verified evidence records, and 65 documented asbestos products. v1.2 (July 2026): Added 10 new expansion yards (Sun Shipbuilding, Todd Alameda, Puget Sound Bridge & Dredging, Lockheed Shipbuilding, Willamette Iron & Steel, Oregon Shipbuilding, Western Pipe & Steel, Newport Naval Station, Federal Shipbuilding Kearny, Marinship Sausalito). Updated Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and Boston Naval Shipyard with additional product records. Evidence Tier Definitions: Tier 1 = peer-reviewed epidemiological cohort study (PubMed). Tier 2 = government health survey or NIOSH Health Hazard Evaluation. Tier 3 = EPA ROD/CERCLA record, appellate court opinion, or verified historical document. Published under CC BY 4.0.
