Democratic Ambivalence Files

Democratic Ambivalence is the research and replication package supporting the manuscript “Democratic Deconsolidation and Democratic–Authoritarian Ambivalence: Evidence from 14 Asian Societies.” The package contains the analytical materials used to examine the relationship between democratic deconsolidation and democratic–authoritarian ambivalence using Wave 5 of the Asian Barometer Survey (ABS). The study analyzes 9,276 respondents across 14 Asian societies. The package includes the data-processing and analytical materials used to construct the democratic–authoritarian ambivalence outcome, the democratic-deconsolidation measure, political and socioeconomic variables, and the statistical models reported in the manuscript. It also contains the final regression and robustness results, hypothesis assessments, tables, figures, and supporting documentation needed to understand and reproduce the reported analyses. The underlying ABS survey data were obtained directly from the Asian Barometer Project through its official data-access process and remain subject to the project's data-use conditions. The repository materials are therefore intended to provide the analytical workflow and reproducibility materials without redistributing restricted survey data beyond what is permitted by the data provider. The package supports verification of the manuscript's principal findings concerning democratic deconsolidation, democratic–authoritarian ambivalence, cross-national heterogeneity, and preferences for strong-leader, one-party, military, and expert rule.
