Commissioned by Animate Projects and funded by a Wellcome Trust Large Arts Award, The Signal and the Noise was developed during collaborative research with biomedical scientist Dr Darren Logan at Sanger Institute, Cambridge. In the film I address the following question: how can I produce a Sci/Art work that moves beyond data visualisation and employs fiction as an operational tool that enhances the collaborative process, brings recent developments in genetic technologies into view and generates discussion and debate amongst diverse audiences? This item contains details and documentation of the various exhibitions, film festival and events that the film was shown in, and documentation of the Silent Signal conference at Derby University. New locus reveals the genetic architecture of sex reversal in the Chinese tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis)
Sex reversal in insects, amphibians, reptiles, and fishes is a complicated and interesting biological phenomenon. Sex reversal changes the sex ratio of populations and may complicate breeding schemes. In the Chinese tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis), genetic females may change into pseudomales, thereby increasing aquaculture costs because of the lower growth rate of the males than that of the females. Here, we identify a new locus associated with sex reversal; this single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) is located in the third intron of the doublesex and mab-3 related transcription factor 1 (Dmrt1) gene on the Z chromosome (named Cyn_Z_8564889) and has two alleles, A and G. Cyn_Z_8564889 regulates sex reversal interactively with our previously detected SNP (Cyn_Z_6676874), with the genetic females simultaneously carrying the T allele of Cyn_Z_6676874 and the A allele of Cyn_Z_8564889 changing into pseudomales. Differential introgression in a mosaic hybrid zone reveals candidate barrier genes
Hybrid zones act as genomic sieves; although globally advantageous alleles will spread throughout the zone and neutral alleles can be freely exchanged between species, introgression will be restricted for genes that contribute to reproductive barriers or local adaptation. Seminal fluid proteins (SFPs) are known to contribute to reproductive barriers in insects and have been proposed as candidate barrier genes in the hybridizing field crickets G. pennsylvanicus and G. firmus. Here, we have used 125 SNPs to characterize patterns of differential introgression and to identify genes that may contribute to prezygotic barriers between these species. Using a transcriptome scan of the male cricket accessory gland (the site of SFP synthesis), we identified genes with major allele frequency differences between the species.
