NRS-17778 | Minutes of the Medical Appointments' Committee [Royal Newcastle Hospital]

The Medical Appointments Committee, consisting of representatives of the Board of Directors and the Honorary Medical Board, was established under resolution of the Board of Directors on 18 November 1919, (1) to consider applications for positions on the Hospital’s medical staff and recommend suitable applicants to the Board of Directors for appointment. It also had responsibility for determining rates of remuneration, approving temporary appointments and applications for Leave of Absence, and recommending on the necessity of particular positions being filled. The Committee operated until the end of 1935; thereafter, a change in the Hospital by-laws established two separate committees to deal with appointments to the Honorary Medical Staff and the Resident Medical Staff, respectively. (2)The Minutes of what appears to have been the Committee’s first meeting, held on 9 February 1920, form part of NRS 17728 ([B10754], p.4); the Minutes of the Medical Appointments Committee do not appear to have been constituted a separate series until August 1922. This series consists of a single volume, containing the Committee’s Minutes from August 1922 to December 1935, along with the Minutes of a meeting of the Medical Appointments Committee for Resident Staff held on 23 December 1936. This volume is of the “exercise book” type, with pages in sewn gatherings between cloth-covered boards with a cloth spine. With one hand-written exception, the Minutes which appear in this volume do so as typescript sheets pasted to its pages.
