Between December 30, 2019 and April 4, 2020, the sales in hypermarkets, supermarkets, mini-markets, discounters, and specialist drug stores in Italy increased of 5.1 percent. In particular, in the South of Italy, the sales value rose of 8.56 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.The first two cases of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) in Italy were recorded between the end of January and the beginning of February 2020. Since then, the number of cases in Italy increased steadily. In March 9, 2020, the Italian government imposed a national lockdown. Italian inhabitants were allowed to leave their houses only for strict necessities such as work or health circumstances.
