The Neurobehavioural and Molecular Characterisation of Novel Models of Mitochondrial Disease

Mitochondrial diseases are a group of disorders affecting the mitochondria which are complex and variable in both their presentation and aetiology. Currently, there are no cures for mitochondrial disease and diagnosis can be a lengthy process involving invasive procedures. Shannen’s work, focused on characterising mouse models of mitochondrial disease, with a focus on the brain, to find potential targets and biomarkers for treatment and diagnosis. Through proteomics and RNA sequencing, Shannen was able to identify several pathways involved in neuroprotection and neurogenesis that may be investigated further as possible drug targets for the treatment of mitochondrial disease.
