High land areas in Uganda are suitable for the farming of Artemisia annua, main source of artemisinin used in manufacture of Artemisinin Combined Therapies used to treat malaria. However, harvested A. annua from these areas contains varying concentrations of artemisinin. The artemisinin level in A. annua grown in Kabarole was 0.93 % while that of A. annua grown in Kabale was 1.4%. This variation may be attributed to differences in soil properties which may affect vegetative growth characters, yield and concentration of artemisinin of A. annua. Thus, bacterial composition and physiochemical properties of soil from Kabale and Kabarole high land areas were studied as a basis for microbial inoculant application into the soil.
