Ophiocordyceps sinensis is one of the most valuable medicinal fungi and has been used as a traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Because of the increasing price and scarcity, it gained significant scientific attention in recent decades. However, the reproductive biology and conditions required for fruiting are not understood. Cultivation of the fungus has not yet been commercially successful, although many efforts have been made in the last several decades.
