Anti-Oedipus III, Lecture 1, 3 December 1973

<p><em>The Deleuze Seminars</em> is a collection of audio recordings, transcriptions, and English translations of, and supplemental materials from, the lectures French philosopher Gilles Deleuze gave during his career at the University of Paris 8.</p>

<p>With <em>Anti-Oedipus </em>published the previous year, this seminar clearly develops more consistently toward concepts in the different plateaus in <em>A Thousand Plateaus</em>, and corresponding to this academic year are several publications linked to this development: in late 1973, Deleuze and Guattari present another chapter, plateau 2 in <em>A Thousand Plateaus, </em>on Freud’s case of ‘The Wolf Man’, and several months later, they publish an essay on Kafka’s novel <em>The Castle,</em> developing a separate project that will result in <em>Kafka. Towards a Minor Literature.</em> Finally, with no available transcripts for academic year 1974-75, two more texts will be published during that missing year: material from another chapter which will become plateau 6 in <em>A Thousand Plateaus, </em>on the Body without Organs, and publication of <em>Kafka. Towards a Minor Literature</em> (1975).</p>

<p>In session 1, 3 December 1973, the session’s focal topic, Freud’s case known as “Little Hans”, emerges in <em>A Thousand Plateaus</em> as early as “Introduction: Rhizome” (p. 14). In contrast to analysis establishing imaginary analogies and a structural system of homologies in “Little Hans”, Deleuze insists on understanding the machinic assemblage whereas Melanie Klein emphasizes the child’s phantasms, blocking the child’s statements and production of unconscious, and André Green’s third way robs the child of his/her affects. André Scala intervenes to comment on the manner in which Freud’s interpretation creates organ analogies, then introduces Hans’s phobia rather than accept (or even see) his becoming-horse. Deleuze responds by pointing out the extent to which psychoanalysis gets involved with confusing the problem of differences between sexes. Richard Pinhas suggests that affects are linked to fluctuations of intensities and to passage from intensity to intention while another student suggests that this shift also corresponds to discontinuous movements of potential energy, the session ending during this student’s remarks.</p>

<p>Cette séance 1, le 3 décembre 1973, est plutôt fragmentaire, et Deleuze y parle très brièvement de la considération difficile chez Freud du cas du « Petit Hans ». Contrairement à l’analyse qui établit des analogies imaginaires et un système structural d’homologies dans « Le Petit Hans », Deleuze insiste sur la compréhension de l’agencement machinique alors que Melanie Klein met l’accent sur les fantasmes de l’enfant, bloquant ses énoncés et sa production d’inconscient, et que la troisième voie d’André Green prive l’enfant de ses affects. André Scala intervient pour commenter la manière dont l’interprétation de Freud crée des analogies d’organes, puis introduit la phobie de Hans plutôt que d’accepter son devenir-cheval. Deleuze répond en soulignant à quel point la psychanalyse s’implique dans la confusion du problème des différences entre les sexes.
