How is accountability portrayed in Africa? A systematic review

Despite studies' reports on accountability in Africa, a comprehensive, continent-wide portrayal of accountability through a scholarly lens remains elusive. Using a systematic review, this study contributes to this debate. The findings reveal that accountability in Africa is portrayed as being affected by elite capture, political interference, tokenistic participation, financial constraints, information problems, and incomprehensible disclosures. This analysis underscores that accountability in African governance is not failing due to absence but due to misalignment, subversion, and performance.
