A cross-sectional survey was constructed using a priori and emergent themes developed from KIIs and FGDs conducted in November 2015 (Bandzuh et al. 2022). Household surveys took place (N = 757 households) from March 26 to April 5, 2016. The household survey was distributed across six subdistricts of East Sumba Regency. The number of surveys per district was proportional to the population’s size; 12% (n = 88) took place in Kanatang, followed by 13% (n = 98) in Wula Waijelu, 13% (n = 101) in Kambera, 17% (n = 130) in Kota Waingapu, 19% (n = 147) in Lewa, and 26% (n = 193) in Umalulu and households were randomly selected to take part in this research. The surveys were conducted during the transition from the wet to dry season in the region; thus, the immediate risk of malaria declined at the time of data collection. Trained, multilingual research assistants from the local university, Universitas Kristen Wira Wacana, field-tested the survey before initiation of the quantitative data collection. Revisions were made in collaboration with local researchers and the U.S. field team, and the questions were field-tested to ensure their integrity. The field team administered the household surveys verbally in participants’ preferred language, either Sumbanese or Bahasa. Participants were included if they were at least 18 years of age, currently living with a partner, and had been residents of the subdistrict for at least six months before data collection.
