Dataset for: Passive medical-student observation and nurse-confirmed re-triage of low-acuity emergency department patients

This dataset supports the article "Passive medical-student observation and nurse-confirmed re-triage of low-acuity emergency department patients: a single-centre prospective cross-sectional study" (submitted to BMC Health Services Research). Study: a single-centre, prospective, non-interventional, descriptive cross-sectional observational study, reported in accordance with STROBE, conducted in the emergency department of Göztepe Prof. Dr. Süleyman Yalçın City Hospital, Istanbul Medeniyet University, Türkiye. Over 30 hours across 10 days (15–25 June 2026), nine preclinical medical students performed passive, contactless visual observation of low-acuity patients (Manchester Triage System categories T3–T5) waiting in the green zone and reported any perceived deterioration to the triage nurse, who independently decided on re-triage. The dataset contains one record per patient (N = 427). Contents: triage_dataset.csv (427 rows; 22 variables covering demographics, baseline vital signs, student report, nurse-reassessment vital signs and NEWS2, and initial and post-reassessment triage categories); codebook.csv (variable dictionary with English descriptions and the coding of Turkish category labels); and README.md. Outcome: re-triage (upgrade) is defined as a post-reassessment Manchester category of higher acuity (numerically lower) than the initial category. Reassessment vital signs and NEWS2 were recorded only for reassessed patients and are otherwise structurally missing. Ethics: approved by the Non-Interventional Clinical Research Ethics Committee of Göztepe Prof. Dr. Süleyman Yalçın City Hospital (Decision No. 2026/0316; 11 June 2026). Data are fully de-identified (sequential patient identifiers; no names, dates, or other direct identifiers).
