Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 7002 is a euryhaline, unicellular cyanobacterium, is capable of growth over a wide range of NaCl concentrations and is extremely tolerant of high light intensities. It is a very fast growing strain; its doubling time is 2.6 h and 4 h, respectively, depending on the nitrogen source. Synechococcus 7002 is easily and naturally transformable, its complete genomic sequence is available, and a system for complementation of mutations and overproduction of proteins is available.
