From 1915, the Board of Directors of the Royal Newcastle Hospital was empowered, under the Newcastle Hospital Act, 1915, (1) to make By-Laws for the Hospital, and did so at intervals until the Hospital was made subordinate to the Greater Newcastle Area Health Service in 1986. The Board’s predecessor, the General Committee, had already exercised the power to “make rules for … the management and control of [the] hospital” conferred on it by the Public Hospitals Act, 1898, (2) by issuing a code of By-Laws in the year of that Act’s passage.This series consists of printed copies of successive revisions of the By-Laws of the Royal Newcastle Hospital, some of these copies including also the text of the Newcastle Hospital Act, 1915, and current hospital regulations. Eight such versions of the By-Laws are represented here, issued between 1898 and 1984.All copies of the By-Laws are in booklet form. The central bifolium of the 1898 booklet (pp.11-14) is now missing. The By-Laws of 1907 are bound together with a second, originally separate, booklet, containing the Regulations of that year. The copy of the By-Laws issued in 1916 includes, as an unpaginated insert, amendments passed in 1918, and the 1931 copy includes, as a paste-in, a smaller booklet with a copy of the amended Rules of the Newcastle Hospital Contribution Fund, along with certain emendations entered by hand which reflect changes to Rules and By-Laws enacted subsequent to its date of printing.
